Which One to Trust on Marcos' Narratives: Social Media vs. Traditional Media
Did Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. Graduated
from the University of Oxford?
Again another fallacy disseminated via social media claims that Bongbong is an alumni of Oxford University after achieving a diploma and degree confirmation from the university.

And again, traditional media including Philippine Star, PDI, and ABS-CBN claim otherwise. Philippine Star reported that he lied about his academic credentials and about being an achiever when in fact he was a failure at Oxford. Inquirer on the other hand questions Bongbong for maintaining his claim that he attended Oxford and got a diploma in political science even after a number of journalists challenged him as his name does not appear on the university’s lists of graduates. ABS-CBN on the other hand supported the same opposing claim by presenting documents which showed that even his father, the late dictator, knew as early as October 1976 that Bongbong could no longer continue his residency at the mentioned university. Other documents presented in the same report include a document showing Bongbong was able to pass only philosophy and failed the other two subjects - economics and politics - for his preliminary examination, a document showing that he even took a second shot but was only able to pass economics which ended his residency, and a document containing the unsuccessful appeal from Bongbong’s side to Oxford. The same news article from ABS-CBN also referenced a letter from the university dated April 20, 1983 which affirmed that Bongbong matriculated in 1975 at St. Edmund Hall, University of Oxford, to read Politics, Philosophy and Economics but did not complete his Preliminary examinations and is therefore not a graduate of the university. The letter also confirmed that he does not hold any degree from the university but was awarded a Special Diploma in Social Studies in 1978 which is not equivalent to a degree.

Meanwhile, VERA Files shared the same sentiments and even personally clarified things with Oxford’s head of university communications Stephen Rouse who said that the special diploma Bongbong received, which the university no longer offers, is “not a full graduate diploma” and that “there is no recorded link” between the two certifications. The fact-checking organization also confirmed with the university that Marcos Jr. failed to complete his program.
