Which One to Trust on Marcos' Narratives: Social Media vs. Traditional Media
Marcoses were Already Wealthy Prior to their Entry to the Malacañan Palace because of their Services to the Tallano Family and because of their Gold Bars
Another pro-Marcos misleading contents that became a usual topic of Marcos supporters online claims that Ferdinand Marcos’s personal wealth was given by his former client - the Tallano royal family who is the owner of the country when it was stil kingdom Maharlika and the richest royal family in world history. Marcos supporters have been sharing information about the Marcos having million tons of gold.

However, according to Rappler, there is no historical proof that a royal family or a Tallan family ruled over a kingdom called Maharlika during pre-colonial Philippines. Rappler has cited Emma Helen Blair and James Alexander Robertsons’ 55-volume book. The said traditional media then found that the words “Tallano” and “Maharlika” were not mentioned in the Blair and Robertson collection of Philippine history documents that covered the years 1943 all the way to 1898. Rappler also cited William Henry Scott’s “Looking for the Prehispanic Filipino” which was published in 1992 and discussed about the pre-colonial Filipinos and how the Spaniards first thought datus were kings but later on realized that these datus did not have power over other kingdoms or other datus within the country. Even the Marcos-approved history book titled “Tadhana: The History of the Filipino People” was reported by Rappler for saying that by the time Miguel Lopez de Legazpi arrived in the Philippines, groups in the country were not unified. The same report also mentioned that none of the Supreme Court website, the LawPhil website, or the Chan Robles Virtual Law Library do not provide any decisions from before 1949 that involve both the families of Tallano and Marcos. Another report from Rappler also argued that it is impossible for anyone to own a million tons of gold as World Gold Council, a market development organization for the gold industry said that only an estimated 190,040 metric tons of gold has ever been mined worldwide. This is equivalent to only 209,483.24 US tons. This report also showed that according to the US Geological Survey’s (USGS) website, there are only 187,000 metric tons (or 206,132.21 US tons) of gold that have been historically produced and there are only 57,00 metric tons (or 6,831.75 US tons) of underground reserves of gold. Hence, the total amount of discovered gold is merely 244,000 metric tons or 268,936.96 US tons.

And again, sources outside social media and Filipino traditional media claim the same thing as the latter source. According to AFP Face Check, Alex Damas who is a public affairs specialist for the US Geological Survey confirmed that as of 2018, only 244,000 metric tons of gold are recorded to have been produced in the world. Also, AFP Fact Check claimed that Marcos’ wealth were not given by a royal family but were accumulated through fraud, based on the Philippine Supreme Court rulings and based on a World Bank report that estimated Marcos plundered $5 billion to $10 billion from government coffers.
